The media and public are invited to celebrate Women’s History month by joining the Delaware Commission for Women at the state’s most prestigious award ceremony honoring women. The 2009 Hall of Fame of Delaware Women inductees are Theresa "Tes" del Tufo, Sally Hawkins and Lynn Williams. A reception and award ceremony will be held at The Delaware Theatre Company, 200 Water Street , Wilmington on Monday, March 23, 2009 at 5:30 p.m.
The inductees are nominated by individuals and organizations from throughout the State. Each award recipient is selected based on her reputation as a trailblazer; her respect among colleagues; her work significance and its lasting effects; her leadership role; and community service she has done that has impacted the lives of others locally or globally.
The evening will begin with beverages, cocktails and a reception with heavy hors d'oeuvres at 5:30 p.m. immediately followed by the presentation of awards at 6:30 p.m. The cost per person is $40. The Delaware Commission for Women (DCW) is the State's primary resource and central point of contact on issues affecting women: civil rights, economic empowerment, recognition and celebration, violence prevention, women's health, and work/life balance.
2009 Inductees
Theresa "Tes" del Tufo's pioneering personal accomplishments, and her unwavering commitment towards helping others succeed, led to her induction. Dr. del Tufo is responsible for establishing three displaced homemakers centers in Delaware and has worked for many years as a state employee in various roles related to the empowerment of women. Tes is also an instructor, entrepreneur, consultant, volunteer and author.
Sally Hawkins is a trailblazer in the field of radio journalism. She is recognized locally, nationally and internationally for building WILM Newsradio, a community-driven radio station providing extensive local reporting, as well as in-depth national and international news coverage. Sally took the reigns of 1450 WILM-AM in 1972, at a time when very few women held leadership roles.
Lynn Washbourne Williams has been ahead of our times in caring for the environment. She founded of the Delaware Nature Society and is a foremost leading environmentalist whose focus is on the education, conservation, and protection of the earth. Something she has done that will benefit us and our children for many generations in the future was to save from development 433 acres of land which is now Brandywine Creek State Park .
